Why Summer Is The Best Time To Get Fit

Summer fitness for the win!

You may think that New Years Resolutions and the first of the year is the best time to get in shape.  Contrary to popular belief, spring and summer time are the times when you will most likely find success.  New years is amateur hour, and now is the best time of year to get started.  I started my mega transformation (ending in a 55 lb weight loss) in June and worked my a$$ off through the summer.  You can too.  Here are the reasons you want to get in shape this summer.

Why Summer Is The Best Time To Get Fit

  1. Longer days, better weather, and more sunshine – You are in better spirits in the summer and this positive energy can translate to more enthusiasm for exercise.  This ups your chance for success.  Plus you can do more and enjoy the longer days with the increased energy and stamina that exercise can give you.  Exercise + summer means maximizing the best time of year and getting the most out of life.  While everyone else is taking the summer off, you are having the summer of your life.  That’s what I did… and I plan to do it every summer from now on!
  2. You wear less clothes – the fact that you wear less clothes in the summer means that your weight loss, new muscles, and progress will be more noticeable to yourself and others.  While this may seem a bit vain, it’s really not.  Visual affirmation of progress and words from others can be some of the most rewarding and motivational benefits from your summer workouts.  When someone tells you that you look good and you know you have been working your tail off, it goes a long way to making you work even harder and doing even better!  So use the season to your advantage and surprise some people.  Soon they will be asking you how the heck you’re doing it!
  3. If it’s hot, you can work out in your air conditioned house – One of the nice things about hot days is that I turn on the A/C in the house and get it nice and cool.  I know it may seem like an odd reason, but this is when I have the best workouts because I’m not over-heating or over-sweating.  Workouts can be more pleasant and you can actually work out harder on days that you have a controlled environment.  It’s the same reason I like to run on those cool San Diego mornings… I can go faster and farther.  In summer, I can get that same advantage with my workouts by cooling down the house.
  4. Gap in sports seasons – We get a break from most sports in the summer and so those weekends of sitting on the couch and drinking beer while watching the game are removed from the equation.  It’s hard to get your fitness started in winter when there are multi-day sports events on the weekends and everyone is downing appetizers and beers.  Summer gives you a bit of a break from these events and you can make great progress in both your fitness and diet.  Then when football season rolls around, you already have some better habits established, giving you more of a chance for success.
  5. You tend to eat healthier – eating tends to be lighter in the summertime.  In the winter, the weather may make eating heavy meals and drinking much more appealing… but during summer you are more attracted to light fare, less drinking, and get togethers that may be around the beloved BBQ… where it is much easier to make healthy choices.  Use summertime eating habits to your advantage to make max reductions to the waistline!
  6. You can blend ice into your Shakeology – this is my favorite.  Shakeology is the best meal replacement/supplement on the market.  I love blending Shakeology with ice and non-fat milk to make a giant, creamy, and refreshing milk shake.  It’s my ice cream fix and my favorite meal of the day.  Not only does it make me feel great… but I lose body fat, gain muscle, and have more energy.  It’s the secret weapon to my fitness strength and physique.  And a big cooling shake is exactly what I want to have on those hot days.
