The Slight EdgeThe Slight Edge by Jeff Olson is a great book on how to turn your life in a positive direction, and find the path towards success versus the path towards failure.  Put another way, THIS IS HOW YOU WIN AT LIFE.  And it applies to everything.  Relationships, finances, work habits… and yes, even fitness and nutrition.  The basic principles of The Slight Edge can be applied to your workout and diet approach such that you find results.  This is like plugging your health and fitness into an equation, removing all the variables, and solving for optimal health… the end result is dramatic.

How The Slight Edge Works

Everyday you do things…  lots of things.  Those things may or may not contribute to various life paths.  In fact, some of those things may actually project you down a path of failure.

The Slight Edge – Path of Success and Failure

Let’s say you are looking to save money and secure your financial future.  You could:

A)  Do small things everyday over time to create savings and financial security

OR

B) Do small things everyday over time to deplete your financial resources and have little to show for it

The first path is created by some who does some financial planning.  They might withhold a little bit from every paycheck.  They might decide to limit their online shopping and money spent going out.  Over time these little things add up and then down the road this person would find themselves with some real amount of savings.  Once this happens, they might then look into having the money invested and continue to add finances to it…  and with time, the savings compound.  The years go by and little things are done to keep the savings growing.  In the end, this compounding effect may leave this person with a small fortune and a hassle free retirement.  This is how this edge works.

The second path might be someone that intends to save money, but spends it on meaningless items, doesn’t save any money, or spends money their money with no real plan.  These daily actions put them on the path to failure for this particular goal.  In the end, they will find they have no money and no financial security.  Just a tough luck story and excuses.

The great thing is that The Slight Edge works for all aspects of life, including your fitness and health.

How The Slight Edge Applies to Fitness and Nutrition

Much like the last example, knowing and using The Slight Edge will put you on the path to success when it comes to your health.  The idea is that you have to do small things everyday and make the right decisions everyday that will accumulate over time.  This will lead you to a fit and healthy version of yourself…  and ultimately a better life!

A word of caution:  Many people watch shows like The Biggest Loser or see advertising that makes fitness and weight loss look like it can happen extremely quickly.  This is the opposite of The Slight Edge.  These are crash diets and programs that may work temporarily but do not support a sustainable fitness and health lifestyle.  In short, they are bullshit and you need to relearn this way of thinking if you really want to find health and fitness.

Back to real solutions.  If you start out doing small things… researching a bit on healthy diet, talking to people that know about health and fitness, making small changes over time to improve diet, and setting a long term goal…  you will be utilizing The Slight Edge.  And you can start by talking to me.  I will recommend starting to workout every day (as little as 10 minutes) and give you structured plans so that you have a blueprint for success.  I will recommend making small changes in your diet over time so that you will not be overwhelmed or starving yourself.  If you can start by eating one healthy meal a day…  in time it can be two, and so on.   This is The Slight Edge, the path to success.

The real secret of The Slight Edge is time.  It takes time (months and years vs days and hours) to achieve real goals.  The mistake many people make is delaying starting.  “I will do it next year” or “I don’t have time right now”.  These are all excuses and the true fact of the matter is that the sooner you start and maintain working towards a goal, the much much sooner you will get there.  Time is the secret sauce to The Slight Edge, and so you better get started!  Otherwise time will be against you!
