The Blog Is Back Online!

the-blog-is-back-onlineYou may have noticed (or not)… but we HAVE NOT been cranking out articles as of late, here at CoachRyanGillespie.com.  Well, after some issues under the hood and some deliberation amongst the experts…  it looks like I am back in business with the blog.  You can expect to see quality articles broadcasting from this site once again… always with the goal to help people find the best version of themselves.  We do this by taking action via fitness, nutrition, and motivation.  That’s why this place exists!  To help you see your potential!  That’s why I created the blog in the first place.  :)

You may wondered why we were offline… and here is the story.

The Blog Is Back Online!

I have been blogging on nearly a daily basis for almost a year now.  During that time I have seen incredible growthin the readership of the site.  During that time, I hope I have even become a much better writer… one of my original goals.  Well, things were looking real swell for both me and the site nearing the halfway point of 2013.  We were seeing between 200-300 unique readers each day, and the blog was rocketing up the ranks of Google.  I had people emailing me their life stories and asking for help constantly.

The blog, it was a-rockin’.

Well, as they say… “easy come, easy go”.  Sometime in late May, we hit a wall with readers and traffic.  The sight began to plummet and I was having a hard time finding it in any Google results.

Were my articles starting to suck?  I didn’t think so.  If anything, I thought I was crafting BETTER stuff.  As summer progressed, the situation worsened and I was left with 50% of my traffic by the end of June.

Now, my blog is the heart of my business.  My readers (you all) are what make this whole coaching gig not only fun, but I actually make some money doing it (it is a business after all).  So as my traffic and readers trailed off… I lost the opportunity to both engage and help new people.  My level of excitement was in a lull right alongside the success of my blog.

So I decided to look into it.

Why was my blog dying?  Why were less and less people coming each week?

The answer lies in a a Google update made in late May.  Their search engine algorithm (called Penguin) had been updated with a critical change that made my website not very attractive to search engines.

For the six or so months prior, every time I finished a blog post… it would submit to a service called “blank” (I will be outing “blank” publicly if they do not deal with me well in the near future).  This service had each blog article post to several of their sites in something called “backlinks”, which are basically just links to the article.  What I didn’t know is that these sites did not have a high Google ranking (called Page Rank or “PR”).

None of this really mattered much at the time… as these links were still valid.

But come May, that changed.

Linking in from low ranking sites to yours would make your site rank lower on Google.

Boom.  I was effed.

But like I said, “easy come easy go”…. except not easy come.  I worked hard to write all that content and build my readership.  When the news really sunk in over the last week.  I was devastated.  A years worth of work and passion that may just end up in a dark corner of the internet.

Luckily, there are options… and we are working to get them fixed.  Over the next month we will be both removing the bad and optimizing what we have already to make the site better than ever.

This is just another bump in the road to solving the most complicated and interesting problem of my life.  Frankly, I have no idea what I am doing…  but I am sure having a time making mistakes and learning.  And that’s what it has to be about.

Did I really expect to get it right the first time?  I sure hoped so…  but I’m not so lucky.  But then again, none of this is luck.  Either way, it’s nice to be back.
