Real Workouts… Do You Truly Push Yourself When You Exercise?

Okay, you’ve started working out and getting healthier.  Good for you.  No seriously.  I’m not trying to be sarcastic.  Any exercise is better than no exercise.  And if you have some fat to shed and you are eating decently, you are going to burn some of it off!  You can eliminate quite a bit of your excess body fat by doing moderate cardio workouts and just not eating too irresponsibly.

I want to talk about REAL WORKOUTS.  At least that’s what I am calling them in this article.  Not that what you might be doing isn’t “real”… but these are workouts that will challenge you mentally and physically… give you that huge rush of endorphins… and make you cut fat like a meth addict.  Luckily this is a bit healthier too.  Buckle up, I want to take your fitness to the next level…

Real Workouts

Look, when I first started exercising… I had no idea.  I did 25 minutes on the elliptical or stationary bike at 24 Hour Fitness and then did five minutes of ab crunches.  I thought I was exercising and pushing my limits.  I would see that rare person at the gym that was working out HARD, jumping from lift to lift and sweating like crazy… and I would think:

“I can’t do that.  I just don’t have that ability.”

I would think the same thing when co-workers or acquaintances talked about running 1/2 marathons…  Lying to myself, I would say:

“My knees can’t take that.  They are skinny people so they can do that.  I am big boned.”

The good news is that I was working out and losing a little weight.  I was trying to eat better, but that’s always a loosing battle when you don’t educate yourself on nutrition and progress and change your workouts.

I was stuck.  10 lbs down and not really too much healthier.

The problem is that I never progressed to a higher level.  The problem was that I’d not discovered what REAL WORKOUTS are all about.

After I gained the weight back, I got pissed off.  And I ordered P90X.  Someone somewhere told me it was extreme, legit, real, or whatever.  I was going to do it… scheduling all the workouts in Excel, reading the nutrition guide, stocking up on the right food, and committing to do it… no BS excuses this time.

And in about 3 weeks I learned what real workouts were all about.

Within a year I had lost 55 lbs, was working out like an animal, and running full marathons.

The reason?  I had finally learned what real workouts are all about.  And once I got 2-3 weeks of these kinds of workouts under my shrinking belt…  I realized you can do anything.  And it became a lot more fun than painful.

More than three years later and well over 1000 “real workouts” and I’m still doing them.  They are no longer “hard”, they are the highlight of my day.  I love my workouts and they love me.

Real Workouts

This brings me to you.  Whatever your path is… where ever you are… you can benefit from learning to push yourself.  You CAN learn to workout hard.  You CAN enjoy fitness.  You CAN run as long and as far as you want.  And the way you start is with real workouts and learning that nothing good will come easy.

If you go to the gym and are not leaving a pool of sweat on the floor, if you are not completely drenched by the end of a workout, or if you are not completely gassed at the end of most workouts… you are not doing nearly as much as you can.

And the results are the proof of this.   Results don’t lie.  We’re all the same.  I didn’t think it when I was “big boned”, but we are.  Any of us can push our bodies to be the healthiest best version they can be.  We can be the best versions of ourselves by being healthy.  We can be the happiest versions of us staying fit.

It’s time to push yourself.  You can do it.
