The term “love at first sight” gets thrown around a lot. I believe in love… but also think it’s a bit unrealistic to love someone the instant that you see them for the first time. You don’t even know that person or what they are about. I would call it an instant attraction or instant infatuation… what most people call love at first sight.
The experience of being handed your newborn child can be a bit of an eye opener. A blank slate of a human being both created by you, existing because of you, and deeply connected to you for a lifetime. After hearing about that “magic” moment that many parents describe and tell me I would experience… and then experiencing that moment first hand… I think I can chalk it up to this:
Meeting your newborn baby is love at first sight.
And the feeling that takes you over is the simply your mind and heart trying to come to grips with it.
If romantic comedies were accurate portrayal of love at first sight in this manner… the movie would consist of two people meeting and then spending the next week holding each other in various states of joy and tears. In other words you would want your money back… not to mention those 2 hours of your life back.
Baby Haven came to us on December 3rd at 12:14 in the afternoon. I can’t say the conditions were ideal and it was a scary morning for our little family. But she is here and she is healthy. Mama is recovering well too. So all is well. :)
My favorite moment with Haven (so far) just occurred minutes ago. Jen moments before had successfully breast fed Haven for the first time. Baby Mama then went into her first deep sleep since delivering. She worked her ass off for the last 24 hours to make the breast feeding take… and now I could (and still can) hear her breathing in deep sleep next to me. Haven, cooing from her first real meal from Mama, is laid across me as our skin keeps each other warm. The clock shows 4:15 AM. My heart is so melted I don’t know if I will ever be able to put it back together.
