Diet Mistakes: And How To Prevent A Total Meltdown

diet-mistakesDiet mistakes.  They happen to the best of us.  I was thinking of this concept as I devoured my waffle turkey cheese avocado cranberry breakfast sandwich (did I mention there was a fried egg on top?) the other day.  I was thinking, “yep, here I go”.  But I always have one piece of information on my side that keeps me calm in times of peril.  It’s my secret approach to diet that keep the six pack intact and still allows me to indulge from time to time.  And it’s this.

Mistakes happen, get over it and move forward.

Diet Mistakes

First of all, I’m not giving you free reign to let your diet slide.  You are 100% responsible for your success… and 100% responsible for your failure.  You buy your food from the store (or a fast food drive through), you put it in your fridge, you make your meals from it, and you put it in your mouth.  If you are continuously making bad choices… it’s because somewhere in this food chain, you have allowed yourself to fail.  You have made the choice at every point in the process.

That said, life happens.  To you, to me, and to everyone.  You’re not always whipping up that kale salad from your fridge.  You end up at restaurants, bars, celebrations, gatherings… and the food and drink can be less than healthy.  And sometimes it’s time to partake and allow for diet mistakes.  It’s okay…  and it’s not the end of the world.

When you are feeling deserving or are celebrating… I say indulge.  Enjoy life.  There is certainly more to it than eating perfectly.

BUT.  And here is where the diet mistakes most commonly happen.

  1. Don’t go nuts, drinking and eating yourself into oblivion.  Too much food/drink or even just bad quality food will make you feel… well… bad.  And guess what happens when you feel bad.  You eat more.  The following day and week can be a little pity party of food if you’re not careful.
  2. Right then and there, on the spot, make mental plans of how you will right the ship the next day… or even later that day.  Once you decide to splurge… tell yourself  what time you will go to the store the next day, what you basically intend to get, and how you will use that to have a healthy week following your diet mistakes.  Then let go of guilt, knowing that you are going to have more healthy days than unhealthy ones.  This mindset alone is worth celebrating!

Diet Mistakes

And here’s the good part.  Once you do these two simple things, you will be on the right course… no matter what you do.  The reason is that you’re setting yourself up for 90% success.  And that’s a heck of a lot better than most people… and probably better than you have done in the past.

The secret to diet is consistency… and not letting little diet mistakes (or even big ones) be the things that define you.  Choose to make mistakes and then easily hop back on the success train.  I do it all the time… and enjoy both parts of the journey!
